A Brief History of Seattle, Washington
|
Seattle, Washington has become one of the most predominant cities in the United States and North America. Its
location in the Pacific Northwest is beneficial with the expanding of the world as a community. Its location is prime to
complement the increase of activity and expansion of Western Canadian cities such as Vancouver and Calgary. Seattle
is also a prime starting and entry point for destinations on the other side of the Pacific Rim. Because of these factors,
Seattle has in recent times boomed into a major third order city and possibly, in some respects, becoming a second
order city of the United States. During the 1980's Seattle witnessed the popularity of the city increase by being ranked
within the top five consistently of the top cities in the United States and on a lighter note being the setting for movies
such as Sleepless in Seattle and Singles. Seattle has been the center for the aircraft manufacturing industry because of
Boeing Aircrafts and a major center of the computer software industry due to Microsoft Corporation.
Seattle was founded in around the late1851 by Arthur Denny. Arthur Denny was an adventurer who
dreamed of opening up the West. Upon hearing about the beauty of the land of the Pacific Northwest, he
was destined to settle there. His ancestry was of European decent who had come to North America and
settled in Pennsylvania. Generations before him had begun the migration West and was continued by Denny
himself. Denny had chosen the spot of Seattle at the inlet of Elliot Bay because of the geography and depth
of the bay at that point. Denny had dreamed of a city that would bring many settlers from the East and
become a great city and become important as a trading post. The city developed steadily through the vision
of Denny, with the creation of a university and through the formation of localbusinesses for the people. Initial
commerce of the area was trade and manufacturing due to the vast resources of timber and coal in the area.
Denny's vision was To set up enough business and service opportunities so that a link to the Northern Pacific
railroad could be built and Seattle could become a major terminal for the railroad. But Northern Pacific
Railroad decided upon Tacoma, Washington, what was then a small cluster of shacks, as its terminus.
Seattle proceeded then to build its own link to the Pacific rail line at Walla Walla, Washington so as to
control it's own development. The rail line was important because Seattle was becoming a major exporter of
raw materials such as coal and logging for the Northwest.
Seattle was beginning to cutting down on the dependence it
had for other cities such as San Francisco and Portland
Oregon. Seattle was expanding rapidly despite not having the
main terminal of the rail line at the time. It was also becoming a
major port for ships as they embarked off to Alaska. In 1889,
a fire broke out and destroyed a majority of the city. The city
rebounded from the fire and began to expand itself north and
south along the waterfront of Elliot Bay from what had become
the central business district of Seattle originally founded by
Denny.
Seattle increased in size steadily when the Pacific Railroad eventually expanded its rail line by purchasing the Seattle link and the increase growth of
manufacturing within the city. During World War I, Seattle boomed with an increase in manufacturing as the U.S. entered the war. In 1916, the Boeing
Aircraft Company was founded and production plants were situated south of the city. During World War II, Boeing had become a major supplier of planes
to Europe and later, when the United States entered the war, for the U.S. itself. Boeing had gone on to become the Seattle area's largest employer in the
area and still is one of the largest today. In the early 1980's computers began to be a prominent element in our society. Seattle had become a major city
with due to its geographic relation to Asia on the other side of the Pacific Rim. One company, Microsoft founded by William Gates, became a major figure
in the computer industry. Microsoft's headquarters were located in the suburb of Seattle named Redmond. As Microsoft has become the number one
corporation within the computer software industry, Seattle has become a major industry support center for Microsoft. Many other companies have
relocated and emerged in the area due to the dominance of Microsoft.
